Best Ryzen Threadripper Motherboards

Threadripper Motherboards

The AMD X399 platform launches on August 10th so we decided to put together our recommended list of best Threadripper motherboards. AMD has been working frantically behind the scenes to ensure all of us enthusiast PC builders and high-end users have options when it comes to choosing out motherboards.

At the point of writing, we know of only four companies working with AMD to produce X399 motherboards – ASUS, AORUS, ASRock and of course MSI. If you’re looking at Threadripper and X399 then you will be familiar with all four of these manufacturers. All four provide motherboards for Intel’s Z270 motherboard for the i7 7700K, Z370 Motherboards for i7 8700K and the recent Ryzen AM4 motherboards.

I don’t want to go into too much detail about Ryzen Threadripper because we are meant to be discussing the best Thtreadripper motherboard but it is worth noting this is AMD’s first attempt at high-end CPUs with only Intel providing options to enthusiasts previously. AMD is entering the market with a very aggressive product in efficiency, performance and value for the money. The next 8 to 12 months will be interesting considering Intel are still to fully respond to the Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 launches. If you are still in the decision-making process then check out best CPU for gaming buying guide.

ASUS ROG X399 Zenith Extreme

ASUS ROG X399 Zenith Extreme

Editors Choice for X399 and Threadripper

The ASUS ROG X399 Zenith is the flagship motherboard for AMD Threadripper and arguably the best motherboard on the market. The look and feel just screams ASUS ROG from top to bottom. From what I understand AMD have been sending these boards to reviewers, which let’s be honest wouldn’t have been done if the board didn’t provide the best results! [Note: We didn’t get one for review from AMD]

The board features 4094 pinned socket for the Ryzen Threadripper CPU, yep it’s literally massive! Power delivery is through dual 8 pin connectors so you will need to ensure your PSU is up to scratch, which it should be with a build like this! Also, you get 8 DDR4 DIMM slots which give you up to 128GB of RAM with a clock speed of 3600Mhz Oc’d.

ASUS ROG X399 Zenith Spec

  • AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ processor series: Ready for the latest TR4 sockets CPUs

If you’re in the market for an X399 platform build then I would strongly suggest this being your motherboard with its superior features, Wifi, 3-way SLI Bridge, 2-way high-bandwidth bridge and top of the range Audio. Let’s be honest if you’re looking for a Threadripper CPU then you need to be pairing it with a board that provides the best features.

ASUS ROG STRIX X399-E

ASUS ROG STRIX X399-E

Once this hits the market I fully expect this to become my editors choice and voted best threadripper motherboard but for now we have very little in exact details and aesthetics.

The ASUS ROG STRIX X399-E is a symptom of many of us gamers wanting to show off our masterpieces. The Strix X399-E is by far the most RGB friendly motherboard I have come across with multiple lighting zones. If we are completely honest most of us don’t build these computers for them to be hidden under our desks in ugly cases. We want/need/must display them with their lights, power and hardware all on display.

The STRIX X399-E mixes look and feel, gaming and sheer power in one. Now granted this board doesn’t come with as many features as the Asus Zenith but this is focused on being a powerhouse for hardcore gaming, streaming and even video editing.

Speaking of gaming you will have support for 3 double-wide graphics cards and also 3 NVMe SSDs meaning you really can push the limits of your gaming RIG with this motherboard while also maintaining some form of affordability. The ROG also packs a powerful punch in the audio department with the newest version of SupremeFX Audio which has also been fine tuned for those of us who like to record audio, use headsets or even produce voice over videos. Gone are the days of your team mates struggling to hear you!

This board has been built specifically for high-end gamers in mind, so if you’re building your Threadripper gaming PC then the ASUS ROG STRIC X399-E should probably be at the top of your list.

Gigabyte X399 AORUS Gaming 7

Gigabyte X399 AORUS Gaming 7

The Gigabyte X399 AORUS Gaming 7 is the top motherboard and flagship for Gigabyte. The more I see this one the more I tend to like it. The look and feel is rather in your face with the RAM DIMM and PCIe orange lights, but again it is growing on mean. Although my favourite sports team wear tangerine, so maybe it’s just me?! Also, it is work noting they are RGB so customise till your heart’s content.

This is another Threadripper motherboard with 8 DDR4 DIMM slots supporting up to 128GB and 3600Mhz OC’d. The motherboard also comes with a Killer E2500 GbE LAN Gaming network which all things considered is one of the better LAN supports.

This board will also allow gamers to setup a quad way SLI or Crossfire setup meaning you can build some gaming mammoth with this motherboard at the centre.

ASRock FATAL1TY X399 Professional Gaming

ASRock FATAL1TY X399 Professional Gaming

Now for a fan favourite the ASRock FATAL1TY X399 Professional Gaming. This board thankfully comes with a fairly similar aesthetic as the previous X299 board. The ASRock FATAL1TY X399 Professional Gaming like the other boards comes with 8 DDR4 DIMMs, 128Gb, 3600Mhz OC’d. The usual situation as you can imagine.

ASRock FATAL1TY X399 Professional Gaming Spec

  • ASRock Super Alloy
  • Gaming Armor: Power / Memory / VGA / Internet / Cooling / Audio
  • Supports AMD TR4 Socket Ryzen Threadripper Series CPUs

  • AQUANTIA 10 Gigabit LAN, Dual Intel Gigabit LAN
  • Intel 802.11ac WiFi
  • ASRock RGB LED
  • BIOS Flashback
  • Hyper BCLK Engine III

As you can imagine this board is rather expensive but it does come locked and loaded with features to explain the cost, to a certain degree anyway. From a strictly gaming perspective, I would say there are certainly better options available but the FATAL1TY is a solid motherboard with lots of expansion slots, connection and generally, you will be guaranteed of a solid build and quality.

ASUS PRIME X399-A Motherboard

ASUS PRIME X399-A

The second budget Threadripper motherboard comes from the popular ASUS PRIME lineup. ASUS PRIME boards are known for giving PC builders a budget option which can provide both affordable costs and a massive list of features. Generally speaking, you will be hard pressed to find a spec that is a must have that isn’t included with the ASUS PRIME X399-A.

There are a few reasons for the lower costs. For example, the Audio and LAN aren’t as strong as the higher end boards. That being said these are relatively minor in the grand scale of things. Then again… If you spending this sort of cash on a system you should ideally be aiming for the best performance across the board.

The ASUS PRIME gives you two M.2 slots. With regards to storage, you will have 6 SATA III ports, dual USB3.1 front and internal headers as well as a U.2 port.

ASUS PRIME X399-A Features:

  • Ready for Ryzen: Latest AMD socketTR4 for Threadripper processors.
  • 5-Way Optimization: One-click, system-wide tuning, delivering optimized overclocks and intelligent cooling for CPU or GPU-intensive tasks.
  • Industry-leading cooling options: Comprehensive controls for fans and water pumps, via Fan Xpert 4 software or the acclaimed ASUS UEFI.
  • Next-gen connectivity: Onboard U.2, M.2 and front-panel USB 3.1 Gen 2 connector.
  • M.2 heatsink: Ultra-efficient heatsink reduces M.2 SSD temperatures by up to 20°C for un-throttled transfer speeds and enhanced reliability.
  • Aura Sync: Controllable onboard RGB lighting easily syncs with an ever-growing portfolio of Aura Sync-capable hardware.
